King Bain II has been in power for hundreds of years, ever since his father, Bain I, was killed in battle during the last bloody war with the drecks. When a truce was finally reached with the drecks, Bain II took the King’s Guard that his father built and created All the King’s Men (AKM) to defend the truce and police the drecks. Paranoid and loyal to the old ways, Bain never leaves his home and steadfastly guards his family, but when his daughter, Miriam, challenges his patriarchal duty and is mated by Io, Bain begins to realize that times have changed and that he can’t protect his daughter forever.
